Roundtable: Geopolitics and International Trade

In an international context marked by the intensification of strategic competition among major powers and the erosion of multilateral governance mechanisms, the global system is undergoing a profound structural transformation. The rivalry between the United States and China has expanded beyond trade to encompass technology, finance, and security, while international trade has ceased to be merely an instrument of economic efficiency and has become a vector of strategic power—particularly with the proliferation of industrial policies, sanctions, neo-protectionism, and the reconfiguration of global value chains. In this scenario of increasing segmentation and selectivity, Brazil faces the challenge of defining a strategy for international insertion that reconciles competitiveness, diversification of partnerships, and long-term structural objectives.

The objective of this initiative is to promote a strategic and integrated debate on Brazil’s international positioning at a time of eroding multilateralism, intensifying geopolitical rivalries, and the reconfiguration of the global geoeconomy, assessing the extent to which Brazilian foreign policy has adapted to recent systemic transformations and how trade can be articulated not only as a vector of economic efficiency but also as an instrument of power, strategic insertion, and the strengthening of national sovereignty.
