CEBRI holds an event on climate leadership and the relationship between Brazil and Azerbaijan at COP29 and COP30

With the approach of COP29, which will take place in Azerbaijan this November, and Brazil's preparation to host COP30 in 2025, topics such as international cooperation and climate action are essential. The two countries, important partners in their regions, stand ready to contribute to global climate efforts. In this context, CEBRI's Environment and Climate Change Program held the event "Connecting Continents: A Dialogue on Climate Leadership from Baku to Belém" on September 5.
Moderated by Teresa Rossi, Deputy Director of Partnerships and International Cooperation at CEBRI, the event featured participation from Izabella Teixeira, Emeritus Advisor at CEBRI; Liliam Chagas, Director of the Climate Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Climate, Energy, and Environment Secretariat; Yalchin Rafiyev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Tulio Andrade, Head of Climate Negotiations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE); and Hugo Mendes, Project Coordinator at the National Climate Change Secretariat of Brazil's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
During the discussion, the activities of both countries were explored on current themes such as climate change, multilateralism, and the transition to renewable energy sources. Thus, COP29 in Baku becomes a crucial moment to shape climate negotiations and pave the way for COP30 in Belém. Additionally, the context of Azerbaijan's climate agenda was another topic of the debate, addressing the role of the oil and gas sector, the country's launched oil financing fund, and the state's vision for countries dependent on these resources. Topics such as the countries' actions in meeting their NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) and the main indicators of success for COP30 were also discussed.
