In an interview with Broadcast, José Pio Borges, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at CEBRI, stated that the remainder of 2026 would be a "hiatus" for the G20. With the US at the helm, the likelihood is that no significant decisions will be made during upcoming agenda items. Pio also addressed topics such as the future of multilateralism, the impact of sweeping tariff hikes, and the accession of 14 Latin American countries to the "Shield of the Americas" initiative.

"Our impression is that 2026 will be a hiatus for the G20, and nothing of consequence will happen. This is because the Trump administration does not believe in multilateral initiatives. Think tanks—which ought to be following the discussions and even occasionally disagreeing with the countries involved—are merely tracking the meetings in a bureaucratic manner," Pio concluded.
